Demographic Changes in Hay Al-Andalus Municipality During the Period 1984–2006

Abstract

Identifying population size, demographic conditions, and changes in population characteristics is of considerable importance. Population growth is the outcome of the interaction of several factors that influence population size. The sex ratio also affects marriage and fertility rates, which in turn influence population growth. The reproductive capacity of a population tends to decline when the numerical balance between males and females is disturbed and increases when the distribution between the sexes is relatively balanced. Moreover, population composition affects labor force size, migration patterns, and types of employment, making demographic analysis essential for development planning. This study aims to identify the demographic changes that occurred in Hay Al-Andalus Municipality during the period 1984–2006, to examine the relationship between population density, population concentration, and the area of the municipality, and to explore future population projections for the districts of Hay Al-Andalus Municipality. The study concluded that the relationship between the geographical distribution of area and population among the districts is not optimal. It also found that, by 2030, the Industrial District is expected to record the largest population within the municipality.
