Visual Pollution and Its Impact on the Urban Aesthetic Landscape in Al-Zawiya, Libya: An Applied Analytical Study

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive scientific analysis of the manifestations of visual pollution and their impact on the urban aesthetic landscape of the city of Al-Zawiya. The study aims to identify the patterns and forms of visual pollution prevalent in the city and to examine their implications for both aesthetic and functional quality. The findings revealed a complex interaction among various forms of visual pollution, including architectural, service-related, and environmental aspects, as well as random graffiti, torn posters, and light pollution resulting from the lack of regulation. These factors have contributed to the formation of an urban landscape characterized by visual clutter and the loss of architectural identity, owing to the widespread presence of visually incompatible elements that diminish the aesthetic quality of the city. The study concluded that visual pollution is a phenomenon affecting multiple dimensions of the urban environment, involving intertwined environmental, aesthetic, and social aspects. It further demonstrated that the urban aesthetic landscape cannot be separated from the level of urban organization and visual planning. Accordingly, addressing visual pollution in the city of Al-Zawiya requires an integrated understanding that combines geographical analysis with an aesthetic approach, while directing policies toward the adoption of practical planning and awareness-based solutions. The study recommends strengthening and enforcing relevant regulations to mitigate this phenomenon and improve urban quality of life.
